Week #2--Short Week, But Here's What We Know.

  1. Nurse throws out donated kidney
After an Ohio man, Paul, donated his kidney to his older sister, a nurse who had just come back from her lunch break mistakenly threw the kidney into the medical waste bin. The sister, named Sarah, was suffering from renal disease, which is when the kidney doesn't filter waste from blood like it should. After the nurse threw out the kidney, Sarah had to go through four surgeries and, after 3 months, got a new kidney. The new kidney, doctors say, is a much worse match to Sarah than her brother's, which was an almost perfect match. A kidney that is a bad match means the patient's body might reject the organ, and then she'll need a new one. The hospital has asked that a lawsuit not be filed. Multiple family members of Sarah and Paul are asking for $25,000 each.

  2. Fired Paraguayan bus drivers crucify themselves after firings
Eight bus drivers got fired from their job 2 months ago. They started protesting in mid-july. When they figured out they weren't getting anywhere by protesting, they crucified themselves. They laid down on planks of wood across the street from Vanguardia's headquarters, and nailed nails in there hands. The nails were driven into their palms in the middle of their middle finger and index finger. They nailed the nails all the way through until it hit the wood. People that walk by and look at the eight guys can barely look.

  6. The 64-year-old, Diana Nyad is trying to become the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Thats 112 statute miles. That's 35 more miles then anyone has ever swam. It's her fourth attempt in the last three years. She tried three times in 2011 and 2012. Most of Nyad's previous attempts were stopped by run-ins with box jellyfish. With about 6.5 miles to go, Nyad was contacted by her support team, who were concerned she was cold and in pain. According to her team, she rebuffed offers to replace her swim cap, which fell off during the night, and instead kept swimming. She finished achieving her goal.

  10. Scientists are trying to solve the mystery of what happened at a reform school in South Florida. The Dozier School for Boys has had nearly 100 deaths in the 111 years that it was open. Many of the deaths were from a dormitory fire in 1914 and a flu epidemic in 1918. But past students have came forward and told stories of alleged beatings, torture, sexual abuse, killings, and the disappearance of other students. There are 31 white crosses that marked where the children were laid to rest. But there are still 22 other children that died and were never accounted for. Using ground penetrating radar scientists discovered another 19 bodies buried in the area, all completely unmarked. In total they found an estimated 50 graves.

  12. President Obama seems to be working quite hard to get votes to allow military attacks on Syria. Conversations began over the weekend. Obama talked with Congress, asking for permission to attack Syria. The Assad Regime apparently used chemical weapons against rebels. Lawmakers are skeptical because they do not want another war like Iraq, where a country was invaded based on incorrect claims. Technically, Obama does not need the permission of Congress to launch these attacks. "Just because I can, doesn't mean I will," said Obama on the subject.

  22. At a florida reform school for boys, various unaccounted for bodies were found. The thirty one accounted for apparently died of flu, a fire, or pneumonia. 22 were lost because of poorly kept state records. This school is known for its brutal past. There were ruthless beatings, sexual assaults, torture, and even killings. This took place in the 40's 50's and 60's. Now various scientists have used technology to find that more than 19 bodies remain unmarked. The families of these lost boys have always known their brothers were murdered. Now the bodies will be taken somewhere where the cause of death can be determined, the bodies can be identified, and the remained can be sent to their family for a proper burial. This school closed in 2011.

  46. After last weeks pitbull attacks in Waterloo, there is much talk about the breed of dog. After the attack occurred last week, Waterloo officials have met and are trying to put in an ordinance regarding the dogs. Today, pitbull advocates are speaking up. They, along with veteranarian professionals say that there is nothing wrong with the dogs. "It isn't the dogs fault. It is un-responsable owners who dont keep their dogs safely tied up or off the streets. Some are just chained or are just in the yard and some others are not fixed." says Holly Frein. The Waterloo mayor expects an ordinance to be in place in 6-8 weeks.
