  17. Neither side of government, has changed its opinion on the new healthcare bill. last night congress decided after weeks of debating to shut down congress. In the end, it led to the one outcome nobody wanted -- one that will stop 800,000 Americans from getting paid and could cost the economy about $1 billion a week. This is the first time this has happened in 18 years, the last time it lasted 18 days. The stalemate seems to have happened because a group of republicans do not like the bill and refuse to budge as well as the group of democrats who refuse to change the bill for there needs. The act also shuts down national parks and other government official places. The government officially shut down at 12:01. The federal government is the countries largest employer and many are wondering how this will affect the economy.

  24. The government might shut down for the first time is 17 years. 401 National parks will go unvisited. Many museums and other federal run organizations will be closed.Shutting down the government could cost the federal government well over $2 billion dollars if it resembles the last shutdowns in 1995-1996, though the economy would be harmed in additional ways that are nearly impossible to measure. Among those distractions is the amount of time federal managers and human resources employees must spend preparing their shutdown plans. Prior to the 1980s, many agencies would simply continue running if there was a funding gap.

The lone survivor of the rockslide, 13-year-old Gracie Johnson, was taken to Children's Hospital Colorado near Denver. Her condition is unknown.
Chaffee County sheriff's deputies rescued her from the debris Monday after tons of rock careered down on a vantage point looking up on Agnes Vaille Falls in Nathrop, Colorado, sometime before 11 a.m. Monday. The site is about 120 miles southwest of Denver.
While authorities have not released the identities of the dead, the Denver Post, citing Sheriff Pete Palmer, said the girl was hiking with members of her family, including her mother and father.
In an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America," Sheriff's Deputy Nick Tolsma said the girl told rescuers her father saved her life.
"The true hero here is her dad," Tolsma told the ABC show. "She said her dad jumped on top of her to protect her right at the last moment when the rocks were coming down."
The site of the slide is still very unstable and no one is allowed in the area other than the authorities, Palmer said Monday. Engineers are evaluating the conditions and Palmer said crews will return to retrieve the bodies "as soon as the area can be declared safe for the search teams."
Undersheriff John Spezze said he believed crews will be able to retrieve the bodies on Tuesday, after rocks thaw from their overnight freeze -- reducing the chance of further rockslides, CNN affiliate KMGH reported Tuesday.
"We've got a job to do. We need to do it," the station quoted him as saying.
The trail leading to the falls is a relatively easy one, according to the U.S. Forest Service, making it popular with families. However, rockslides are apparently relatively common near the trail, according to hiking website Alltrails.com.
The cause of the rockslide is not known, but Palmer said heavy rain this month in Colorado may have been a contributing factor.

  31. A government shutdown starting Tuesday, Oct. 1, is now upon us. The House and Senate couldn't agree on a bill to fund the government, and time has run out.

So... it's shutdown time. Let's take a look at how this will work.
Not all government functions will simply evaporate come Oct. 1 — Social Security checks will still get mailed, and veterans' hospitals will stay open. But many federal agencies will shut their doors and send their employees home, from the Environmental Protection Agency to hundreds of national parks.
Short answer: There are wide swaths of the federal government that need to be funded each year in order to operate. If Congress can't agree on how to fund them, they have to close down. And, right now, Congress can't agree on how to fund them.

Rakow of St. Bonifacius, Minnesota, is recovering from accidentally shooting a 3.5-inch nail into his chest that came within 2 millimeters of his coronary artery. The harrowing incident unfolded Friday while the 58-year-old man was repairing his neighbor's deck when his nail gun kicked back, firing the spike through his chest and piercing his heart. He then called his wife who took him to the hospital. The nail's location in his heart is most likely wat asked his life, heart surgeon Dr. Louis B. Louis IV of Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis says. The nail caught itself on the sternum and that prevented the nail from going any deeper. Surgeons were able to remove the nail and sew two stitches directly onto Rakow's heart.

  57. Last night the Iowa State football Coach Paul Rhoads was on a tyraid. They barely lost to texas, and he believed that it was because of the poor job by the officals. They were winning 30-24 with under a minute to play, and the running back for iowa state supposedly fumbled the ball. He was ruled down by contact but was reviewed and overturned. If Iowa state had won it would have been Paul Rhoads first Big 12 win of the season.
