Mother of Infant, "Got was with us." A young woman pulled from the wreckage of March's deadly mudslide in Washington State spoke out for the first time. 22-year-old Amanda Skorjanc said she can still visualize mud and debris rushing towards her and her infant. Skojanc was home with her 5-month-old son that Saturday morning. She reported, that all she could do was hold onto him, wait for the earth to stop moving, and pray. Skorjanc's home slid about 600 feet before coming to a stop. They were trapped but a cushion had formed around her. She found herself surrounded by her broken couch and recliner. Still, she'd been severely injured. Flooding could take place all over U.S. rivers due to snowmelt. The forecast also has rain sweeping across the country, which will just add to the water. Since the ground in most areas is still mostly frozen, the water doesn't soak into the ground, it just flows into rivers. A Mississippi child was swept away last week from flood waters. So people should be aware of their local river flooding.
In Florida a women was attacked by a bear. The type of bear was a black bear. The bears are waking up from their hibernation and are hungry. The women walked into her garage and saw multiple bears going through her trash. The women was then dragged by one of the bears into her drive way. She was then able to escape and call 911. She is now recovering from minor injuries.
Bears officially have come out of hibernation. A women was attacked in Florida. The bears came in through a woman's open garage door and searched through her garbage for food. The woman says that there were at least five bears of various sizes in her garage. The bears had dragged her out of her garage and onto her driveway leaving her with cuts and scrapes all over her body.
A wildfire on the Pacific coastal city of Valparaiso, Chile took at least 12 lives. At least 2,000 homes had been destroyed by the blaze, leaving some 8,000 people without a place to live. More than 1,200 firefighters worked to put out the blaze in Valparaiso. The wind interfered with the firefighters' ability to create firebreaks, so the blaze spread to more than 2,000 acres.
There was a fire in Prairie du Chien into Monday morning that destroyed the SLumberland furniture store in Prairie. Eight area fire departments fought against the fire. The Wisconsin State fire Marshal is working on the investigation of how it started. Several nearby businesses were damaged. The smoke was so thick nearby homes were evacuated. But thankfully no one was injured. The firefighters were scared due to the high winds and harsh flames.

Each tree is sold for $25, and they believe social media has caused more trees to be bought by spreading news about the sales.
Iowa farmers are planting oats and preparing fields for corn and soybeans as recent rainfall has improved soil moisture conditions. The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Monday said 29 percent of Iowa’s oat crop has been planted, 10 percent ahead of last year but 22 percent behind average. Farmers in east central and south central Iowa have over 50 percent of their oat acreage planted. Statewide there were 3.9 days suitable for fieldwork in the week that ended on Sunday. Activities for the week included applying fertilizer and anhydrous, tiling, terrace construction, and spring tillage. Topsoil moisture levels were rated 6 percent very short, 25 percent short, 57 percent adequate and 12 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels were rated 17 percent very short, 38 percent short, 43 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus. There were scattered reports of corn being planted, mostly in southern Iowa. Producers have been waiting for sustained warmer temperatures before planting their crop. Pasture condition was rated 13 percent very poor, 26 percent poor, 43 percent fair and 18 percent good. Most pastures were still slow to emerge, but rains late in the week helped return some green to the area. Calving conditions were reported as good.
Parts Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota might be cured of the drought conditions that happened last year because of cool wet spring, so the weather we are having now is good for in the future.
The Iowa Hawkeye Football team began spring practice at West DesMoines Valley HS. The Hawkeys are looking very sharp this year and hopes are high for this season. There are many good players at all positions, so the competiotion level is high. Jake Rudock threw for over 200 yards and 3 Td's. That was the highlight of the day.

276 high school students were trapped in a capsized ferry near South Korea. The ship capsized due to large waves and bad weather. Rescuers worked through the night to try and save the students. Manlius swans Manny and Faye may be parents again by early June. Michael Bean is a biologist at a small village of Manlius. There are two swans named Faye and Manny. Faye has laid her first egg and is most likely to lay another six to eight eggs in the next week or soon. Last year, Faye produced seven eggs by April 1st., but only 4 hatched. They think the reason they are having them so late is because of the severe cold. But everything should be okay now.

The Iowa Hawkeye Football team began spring practice at West DesMoines Valley HS. The Hawkeys are looking very sharp this year and hopes are high for this season. There are many good players at all positions, so the competiotion level is high. Jake Rudock threw for over 200 yards and 3 Td's. That was the highlight of the day.

ReplyDeleteAfter about 6 years the Veterans Memorial Building is ready to reopen. In 2008 record floodwaters took over the building in downtown Cedar Rapids. The renovation cost about $18.5 million.

Washington Mudslide death toll rises to 39
ReplyDeleteThey are still recovering bodies from the March 22 mudslide in Washington state. They have recovered 2 more bodies from the mud Wednesday night and have 3 not yet identified by the medical examiners office. Washingtons governor ordered that flags be put at half staff.

Storms Causing Damage
ReplyDeleteRescue crews were working Sunday to clear fallen trees and power lines from roads. More than 135,000 homes and businesses statewide in Michigan. Power was restored to most homes on Wednesday. The Red Cross didn't open any shelters but is providing aid to families who were affected my the storms and power outages.

Andreas Seppi was playing No. 15 Mikhail Youzhny in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters when he found himself having to chase after a perfectly placed shot. His shot just caught the line for the outright winner. Seppi went on to win his match against Youshny and this shot definitely helped his case.

A wildfire on the Pacific coastal city of Valparaiso, Chile took at least 12 lives. At least 2,000 homes had been destroyed by the blaze, leaving 8,000 people homeless. More than 1,200 firefighters worked to put out the blaze in Valparaiso. The wind also interfered with the fire, making it spread.

We are in what is called a Pollen Vortex, which basically is when all the plants are blooming at the same time, making pollen be everywhere. So far we have a medium pollen count.

A small town in Texas called Lovelady was hit by an unexpecting tornado. With the technology we have these days, they said they should have seen it coming and prepared for it. The weather alert in there town said a lightning storm was over 100 miles away but somehow a tornado appeared in the early morning and still hit them.

276 high school students were trapped in a capsized ferry near South Korea. The ship capsized due to large waves and bad weather. Rescuers worked through the night to try and save the students. This accident is caused by one of many storms that South Korea has during spring.

Manlius swans Manny and Faye may be parents again by early June. Michael Bean is a biologist at a small village of Manlius. There are two swans named Faye and Manny. Faye has laid her first egg and is most likely to lay another six to eight eggs in the next week or soon. Last year, Faye produced seven eggs by April 1st., but only 4 hatched.
