  2. Northern California Wildfires Show Slower Growth-
These fires are the largest of 17 and were sparked by lightning and 15% was contained. 250 homes have been threatened and the fires have burned 98 sq. miles in Klamath National Forest. The blazes picked up steam when humidity dropped and winds increased. 2,100 firefighters and 19 helicopters are trying to help this situation by putting down fire lines, laying hoses, and clearing brush from towns that have been evacuated. But as the temperature has been dropping and with cloudy skies have slowed the spreading of these fires.

  6. A volcano, Mount Tavurvur in Papua New Guinea, erupted on Friday. It is a high concern eruption because of it's location in the tropics. This gives it the potential for more lift and it could possibly have an effect on the climate. The eruption took place on New Britain island in the main chamber of the volcano. The volcano spit out ash as high as 60,000 feet above sea level. The volcano is very close to the town of Rabaul, but not a lot of major damage has been reported. No airlines can take planes through this area because the ash is expected to travel as high as 50,000 feet into the atmosphere. Most of the ash fall is in uninhabited areas. There have been no reported injuries following the eruption.

  7. On Friday Mount Tavurvur erupted located in Papua New Guinea. The ash is expected to move up to 50,000 feet into the air which is higher than airplanes fly, so far the ash has been landing in uninhabited areas or out to sea with no injuries reported. There is a long term risk of climate change because of its location in the tropics.

  8. Last Wednesday a 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit the northwest corner of British Columbia's Vancouver Island. The U.S. geological survey said there were no in injuries or damage. It was reported that people 400 miles away in seattle felt the earthquake. If these earthquakes keep happening it could split earths crust and make worst, and worst earthquakes.

  16. I think the biggest natural disaster is the landslide in Japan. 46 people are dead from a landslide in Hiroshima, Japan caused by heavy rain. The rain was coming down at 1 cm per hour in 24 hours. That is about 9.6 inches of rain. Around 2,700 firefighters, police men, and Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force were involved in rescuing people. People were swept away by the landslide so it was difficult to find how many people were hit by it. When it collapsed again a 53 year old rescue worker was killed. He saved five people.

  18. I think the biggest natural disaster that occurred recently was the freak hailstorm in Russia. Swimmers and sun bathers in Novosibirsk were caught off guard when the sun was covered up by clouds. There was a large drop in temperature and hail stones started falling. The swimmers and bathers ran to cover under umbrellas and towels.

  22. I think the biggest natural disaster is the twin tornados Pilger, Nebraska. Two people were killed. 16 people were seriously injured. 10 million dollars in damages to 20 homes. Three quarters of the town of 350 is gone. 40-50 homes are now rubble, including a fire station and the business district of the town. The twin tornados are also a rare thing to see.

  23. I think the biggest natural disaster was the Bardarbunga volcano that erupted in Ice land. They can't fly planes anywhere around there because the ash is so bad. Its been the cause of many earthquakes in Iceland.

  24. Officials say the waves could cause damage along all coastlines of all the Hawaiian islands, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. They estimated the waves could reach 2 meters high, but initial waves have not been as large as anticipated. The largest wave so far was about 1.5 meters. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said "urgent action" should be taken to protect lives and property.
