2016 has been a year for trying to prevent strokes. Strokes are blood clots in the brain that can paralyze and kill you. There is a very small tool called a retrieving stent. This stent is a wire with mesh that can be guided through arteries in the brain to grab the clot and remove it. The American Heart Association has approved this treatment. The percentage of recovery and full function has increased significally, by nearly 40%. In the US alone, nearly 795,000 people have strokes annually. This treatment could prevent lots of permanent damage and save many lives.

  3. In 2004, Nathan Copeland broke his neck in a car accident, paralyzing him from the chest down. He was just getting started in college, but the accident made it very difficult to continue his studies. Nathan participated in a medical trial for the brain computer interface (BCI). The BCI is a device containing electrodes, which is connected to a robotic arm. The arm stimulates nerve cells, enabling the touch sensation. This trial may have helped advance prosthetics so that they can allow a person to feel themselves touch something again. Nathan hasn't felt anything with his hands for the past 10 years, but the BCI helped him have that feeling again.

  4. One of the most common chronic diseases, diabetes. Diabetes is huge and starting to increase world wide. However theres more medical advancements all the time and this is the latest with diabetes is an artificial pancreas. The artificial pancreas is an automated insulin delivery system that replicates the actual organ by mimicking a healthy person’s glucose regulating system. The device consists of 3 parts — an insulin pump, a continuous blood glucose monitor that is placed under the patient’s skin, and an advanced control algorithm software embedded into the patient’s smartphone that detects how much insulin to provide based on the individual’s physical activity, stress, sleep, and metabolism. Right now there towards the end of two trials. With this and is almost ready for public trial.

  5. For people who suffer migraines, and painful headaches taking aspirins is useless. Doctors have associated severe headaches with the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG), a facial nerve, but they haven't found a long-term treatment for SPG. There is new technology that is being tested in California, that is a patient-powered tool to block SPG signals when you have the first signs of a headache. You have a implant of a small nerve stimulating device. They place it on your upper gums on the side where your headaches occur (obviously either the left side or right side of your mouth) When the person feels a headache the put a remote up on your cheek, where the implant is. And it stimulates the nerves.

  6. Immunotherapy cancer vaccines are new vaccines. Doctors are hoping the vaccines are going to be able to help the body fight off cancer cells without killing the healthy cells. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the vaccines for treatment of advanced prostate cancer and melanoma. The current research is mainly focusing on pairing the new vaccines and the old ones. The tetanus vaccine along with new cancer vaccines have been used in the treatment of glioblastoma. In individuals who received the dual vaccine they lived 3-7 years longer. The most anticipated vaccine will be for lung cancer.

  7. About a month ago it was said that October is the month that the flu has its spike. Back in September the CDC (Centers of Disease and Control Prevention) has been convincing Americans to get the flu shot for the up coming month. Staying away from people who are sick and constantly washing your hands might help but getting the vaccine would better prevent it. The annual deaths relating to the flu are from 3,000 to 49,000 since 1976. Yet that number changes every year. Adults over 65, pregnant woman and young children are more prone to the flu. However 6 months and older should get the vaccine each year. Having the flu is a very different experience than having a cold, the common flu can kill you.

  9. The “Argus II” takes a video signal from a camera built into sunglasses and wirelessly transmits that image to implants in the retinas of people who have lost their vision. Though it’s been available in Europe since 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only approved the eye earlier this year. The system isn't perfect. It lets a blind person regain basic functions like walking on a sidewalk without stepping off a curb, and distinguishing black from white socks, but only lets you read one giant-sized word at a time on a Kindle. Plus, as the retina itself heals over the implant, the quality of vision decreases. The Argus II is currently only approved for people who have lost their sight from retinal pigmentosis—which affects 1 in 4,000 Americans. But the technology could soon help the more than 1.75 million people who suffer from macular degeneration.

It just allows them to be able to do the basics like walk on the sidewalk without walking off the side walk or running into a sign. The retina heals over the implant which decreases vision quality. http://www.menshealth.com/health/medical-breakthroughs/slide/2

The company is working on a transdermal biosensor that reads blood analyses through the skin without drawing blood. In order to do this there is a tool that is similar to an automatic tooth brush that will remove a small layer of skin so the scanner can read your blood through it. If the glucose levels of the patient get too out of control the scanner will alert loved ones and medical care to get that person help when it is needed.

  16. A Spectacular advances in the medical field is changing the world as we speak. One of many advancements that physicians are using today, is handheld diagnostic devices called the Electromyography (EMG) Machines. It 's used to accurately measure muscle health and the motor neurons cells that control them. Electrodes in an EMG detect electrical signals transmitted by motor neurons and then translates these signals into numerical values, sounds, or graphs.
"EMG machine can do more than you think though"says, Mayo Clinic, EMG results can rule out the following conditions:
Muscle disorders, such as muscular dystrophy or polymyositis
Disorders of nerves outside the spinal like carpal tunnel syndrome or peripheral neuropathies.

The new deice is made of plastic material that gradually dissolves. They say the first three years after the surgery it will take to dissolve. They are hoping with this new approach, they can save more lives in the U.S.

Indigo-Clean had developed a technology using visible light that continuously disinfect the environment and to try and decrease your chances of your current infection getting worse. The light reflect off walls and surfaces then penetrate harmful micro-organisms. The light targets naturally molecules. The light is absorbed by a molecule then excites it causing it to produce Reactive Oxygen Species inside the cell. This creates a similar effect like bleach.

There is a new robotic hand for people who have lost limbs, or paralyzed victims.Previously, brain implants to help move these artificial limbs have had limited success because the person had to think about each individual action like open hand, close hand in order to move the limb. Now researches are putting implants in the area of the brain that controls the intention to move, not just the physical movement itself. This allows patients to fluidly guide a robotic limb.

  23. New drug combination shows promise in tackling leukaemia treatment resistance

One of the reasons for drug resistance is that cancer cells are able to retreat from the blood into the bone marrow, spleen or lymph nodes. The drug is called cerdulatinib. Tyrosine Kinase (Syk) and janus kinase (JAK) are the two key cell signaling pathways that promote cancer cell growth. cerdulatinib not only blocked the signals that tell cancer cells to grow, but also reversed the protective effect of the surrounding tissues.

After finding drugs that reduce inflammation in a number of autoimmune diseases, they found they may also treat symptoms of depression. Scientists have found that children with higher levels of cytokines and other inflammatory markers were at greater risk of depression later in life. In clinical trials, two new classes of anti-inflammatory drugs have been shown to reduce inflammation in a range of autoimmune diseases. These drugs have already started to be administered to patients who do not respond to standard treatments.

This method provides images that reveal the presence of protein in the brain called tau, with gamma rays and a specially selected radioactive molecule. People with Alzheimers have a raised level of protein in the brain which leads to a large mass in the brain. It's just getting started and it is already looking positive for research purposes. A current case study shows that the image and reality are really close. The imaging can help lead to new methods to develop medicine to help with Alzheimers.

  32. Targeted cancer therapies, are drugs that work in two different ways. The drugs either targets the tumor and kills it or it interferes with the spread of the disease and slows down the process. These drugs are a better choice than chemo or radiation because unlike the two I just listed the drugs only attack the tumor. Within the last decade 25 drugs have been approved by the FDA. The scientist working on this say that there will be a drug to help everyone in a different way, meaning that the drug would help specifically help them out depending on the cancer they have.

Most all patients agree that the worst part of getting a colonoscopy is the preparation for it. Before having a colonoscopy, patients have to guzzle a huge amount of a salty, repulsive-tasting drink and laxative. There are many different brands available, but most of them have the same gross factor. Doctors say 40% of all colon cancers might be prevented if people underwent regular screenings, but they don’t because of the preparation. Now, the Boston-based company ColonaryConcepts’ goal is to answer many colonoscopy patients’ prayers by developing bowl-clearing food bars and drinks that taste more like chocolate and fruit smoothies. The bars will come in three favors, lemon cooler, coconut, and white chocolate. Smoothies will come in two flavors, strawberry-banana and vanilla shake, and drinks also come in two flavors, mixed berry and orange. They are hoping this will increase the number of people that have colonoscopies to reduce the number the colon cancer victims. More research is needed before theses bars and drinks become available to the public.

Today, clot dissolving drugs are the first choice of treatments for most strokes, when they don't fully do their jobs, physicians can now use a stent retriever to remove the small mass. A wire with a mesh-like tip is guided through the artery into the brain to grab the clot. When they remove this wire, the clot goes with it. The American Heart Association has given this method a strong recommendation. It is known to improve the odds of the patients survival and being able to function normally again.

  41. Depression Could Be Treated with Anti-falmmitory Drugs"
Inflammation is the result of the immune system's response to injury or infection, whereby immune cells release pro-inflammatory proteins - such as cytokines - to help fight harmful pathogens. But this inflammatory response is not always helpful. Sometimes, the immune system mistakingly launches an attack on healthy cells and tissues, causing autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis.
In clinical trials, two new classes of anti-inflammatory drugs - anti-cytokine monoclonal antibodies and cytokine inhibitors - have been shown to reduce inflammation in a range of autoimmune diseases, and these drugs have already started to be administered to patients who do not respond to standard treatments.

  45. Depression is very common in young teens of today’s society and doctors have recently discovered the physical root of depression. Depression affects the lateral orbitofrontal cortex area of your brain. This discovery could open up possible new treatments. Depression being found in this area can link to other areas such as the medial orbitofrontal cortex which is the memory systems of the brain, and with depression people tend to not think of the happy memories they have, and only focusing on the negative. So researchers have developed plans to go to the root of depression using thought processing or certain medicinal drugs to target depression more accurately.
