He later visited Washington D.C. and was referred to as the oldest living veteran. Overton became an in-demand celebrity. The Texas governor showed up at his door bearing whiskey, Barack Obama invited him to the White House, and the San Antonio Spurs gave him a number 110 jersey (which was his age at the time) and brought him onto the court for a standing ovation. 3. The U.S. Military is changing its retirement system. They are changing from a monthly check their entire life to ones that include investment accounts. This suggestion was made to the military by the Retirement Organization. They did this because many people left the military with no retirement saved up. Currently, Service members must serve up to 20 years to receive a pension. More than 80% fall short of that number.

  7. As part of their latest endeavor to improve care for our country’s combat vets, the Department of Veterans Affairs has invested in a rapidly advancing form of intelligence: the artificial kind. AI has been hailed by most forecasters as a revolutionary force in all manner of fields, from transportation to predicting the weather, and this exciting wave of possibility promises to transform the healthcare sphere, as well. The opportunity to use this growing tech to improve veteran healthcare has rightfully attracted positive attention to some intriguing new initiatives. The military population is no stranger to AI. Artificial intelligence has already begun to roll out in combat applications, but it looks to take the leap into health treatment, creating exciting new possibilities for treating and preventing debilitating and fatal diseases in our veteran population. Especially when considering the challenges unique to veterans’ healthcare, this new approach carries hope for more effective and intelligently designed treatment for every veteran who needs it. Given everything our service members have done for our country, providing them with the best possible care is something all Americans can get behind.

  11. It took Donald Trump 12 days to speak in public about the terrorist attack that left four American soldiers dead. It was only because a reporter asked, “Why haven't we heard anything from you so far about the soldiers that were killed in Niger?” he finally spoke about it. Trump answered that he likes to call and write letters to family members of service troops. Aides of former presidents rejected the notion that their bosses did not communicate with families who lost loved ones. There's a lot we still don't know about what happened in Niger and why four American soldiers died there. Republicans and Democrats are calling for an investigation.

  20. President Trump signs the Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act. These will enable Secretary David Shulkin to fire underperforming Department employees and protect whistleblowers. VA accountability is law that makes sure that our veterans are treated with respect they deserve. It gives the secretary the authority to move federal employees who fail and endanger our veterans and to do so quickly and affectively. Trump says "Those entrusted with this sacred duty of serving our veterans will be held accountable for the care they provide." This bill also protects whistleblowers who do the right thing this wants to reward the many dedicated employees at the VA.
