The basketball girls from Cresco ended with a perfect season! They went 26-0 throughout the season. To add on top of that they won the class 3A state title in Desmoines this past weekend. In the championship game they beat Sioux Center 73-48! Crestwood had not won a state team title in any sport since wrestling in 1964. The girls said they were happy to make the community proud and were thankful for all of the support given.
The Iowa boys' state basketball tournament began Monday, March 5th. The tournament takes place in Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. The first game of the day began at 9:30 between Ed-Co and North Linn. The tournament will last all week, with championships being on Friday. Each day will include 6-7 games.
For the 1A bracket in the Girl's Basketball State Championship Springville was the winner. They played Newell-Fonda and beat them by 11. Newell-Fonda advanced after the first round after beating Kee High by 16. The final score of the Springville vs. Newell-Fonda game was 60-49. Mikayla Nachazel, a senior, led the way with 25 points. She also had 11 rebounds and 3 steals. She was voted caption of the all-tournament team for the 3rd straight year.
Lucas Roland won a historic state title at this years Iowa State Wrestling Tournament. Lucas won the 170 pound state title in class 2A. He became the first person from PCM to win a state title. Lucas said that he was wrestling for his mom, who has breast cancer. After winning his final match he ran straight to her. Lucas ended his season 49-1, and stated at the tournament, "This is the greatest feeling in my life."
Iowa City West won the 4A quarterfinal game! The score ended up 62-50, with Muscatine losing and Iowa City West advancing to the 4A semifinals! Fans of Iowa City West are eager to see what happens in the semifinals!
Iowa City West won its first state title since 2012. They ended up beating their rival Iowa City High. The final score was 56-45. This was the first time that Iowa City High had lost this season. Both of these schools are in class 5A. In the class 4A, Marion and Grinnell played against each other. Marion ended up winning, with the score ending at 69-48.

Home-school students will be able to attend music programs and other extracurricular activities at regular schools in Oregon, following a move by the Legislature. Both the House and the Senate have approved to allow students in all grades to attend extracurricular activities including speech and musical programs, at state schools.
The All-Iowa Elite Wrestling Team is usually made up of the 14 best wrestlers, one at each weight, but this year it included 15 wrestlers. Fort Dodge's Brody Teske and Underwood's Alex Thompson both won their fourth state title at 126 pounds. They both lost to each other during the regular season giving them both one loss to their undefeated high school records. They both beat each other by 2 points in the regular season matches. They are both one of the best, and there was no way to choose one over the other.
Taking part in after-school clubs can give primary school children from poorer families a boost in academic performance and provide them with important social skills. after-school clubs stood out among a wide range of out of school activities as having positive benefits for young children.

Tuesday at the Iowa Boys State basketball tournament was a talent showcase. Three of the top talents in Iowa played within a 3 hour time period. Iowa recruits senior Joe Wieskamp and junior Pat McCaffery faced of in the 4A state quarterfinal. Wieskamp had a great game, finishing with 29 points. In the end defending chmpion Iowa City West and McCaffery moved on. In the 3A quarterfinal, one of the top prospects in Iowa showed his tuff. A still growing 6 ft 11 inch Sophmore Xavier Foster of Oskaloosa showed many what he has been doing all season. Playing great defense with a strong post game, the 10th grader also has the ability to knock down the three point shot going 4/5 in Oskaloosa's win. All three of these players could meet at Iowa in three years. Wieskamp and McCaffery have already committed, with many Iowa fans hoping foster will follow suit.
Cascade held Grundy Center to 16.3-percent shooting. Grundy Center was 3 of 25 from 3-point range. The Cougars led 22-15 at halftime and went up 10 points early in the third, but the Spartans got back in it with the free-throw shooting of Hailey Wallis. She was 18 of 18 from the free throw line and finished with 29 points. Grundy Center tied it at 37, but Abby Welter hit two free throws and Cascade held on. Nicole McDermott led the way for the Cougars with 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Anne Ryan added 13 points and Jordan Simon had 11. Cascade won their first girls' state basketball title.
In a classroom in Waterloo, a teacher had found a new way to prepare for the day. They're doing yoga! The teacher, Mrs. Ritter at Kingsley Elementary started the idea saying she loves yoga and sometimes her 5th graders come to school really energetic, or really tired, or even nervous before a big test. She says yoga can really help get them in the right mood for the day and also helps her students bond and get to know each other. Currently her 5th grade class does yoga in the morning, but she says there are plans to hopefully expand yoga to some other classrooms and students. She was able to buy yoga mats and yoga balls recently after winning last month's Cedar Valley Tools for Schools.
Stoneman douglas hockey team won the state championship just a week after the shooting. They even entered as the underdog. They were the 4 seed out of 4 teams. They were able to overcome all odds to win the championship against Tampa Jesuit 7-4. The senoirs of the team were really proud of the team effort and that they could do this after what happened a week ago.
The Springville Orioles girls basketball team won their third consecutive championship last weekend at the state tournament. Seconds later one of the players was crushed. Her house had gone up in flames. The player claims she felt crushed. She was super happy about the win, then immediately broke down after hearing the news. The player's family remains unharmed. The father went to the emergency room just incase.
Stoneman Douglass won the ice hockey national championship, this was 11 days after the shooting. The team won this championship in Statewide Amateur Hockey of Florida league, this past Sunday. They entered the tournament seeded 4th and got 1st. They had to play East Lake which is the number 1 seeded team and won 3 to 1. The extra curricular activities that schools offer to the kids they should take advantage of them because some kids like the sports and art clubs. All though other kids might not do them that still is not a bad thing because some of them do band and other things like that. Students should get involved in the extra curricular activities because it is a good way to get involved in their school and help make them get out of their comfort zone. Students should make themselves be noticed by other people instead of by their group of friends. Students who dont have any friends or people to hangout with then the extra curricular activities is a perfect thing for them to do because then they can meet people in what ever sport they go out for and then they can make friends.
In the state of Oregon, legislation has passed a law that allows homeschool and charter school students to take part in extracurricular activities such as sports and music. This law requires to allows and the school has to let them participate although the school can still charge fees, the fees are limited. Last Saturday, show choirs from all around Wisconsin and Iowa came together in Holmen Wisconsin for the annual Gathering of the Stars. The Onalaska Hilltoppers took the top spot for best vocals, best band, as well as best show. In the prep division, Onalaska Express took first and MFL MarMac Young Americans as first runner ups. This ended the Hilltoppers with a win for their last performance of the season.

A Marion Basketball player with Autism scored in the Iowa State High School Boys Basketball Tournament. When he got the ball the first thing he thought when he got the ball was "Lord Please let me make this." His name is JD Grawe and he scored the final 2 points of the teams loss to Xavier in the 3a Quarter Finals. JD was so happy he held up his the teams state award to his crowd.

With seconds winding down on the clock he shot three times rebounding each and on his fourth one he made it. As Grawe was shooting the basket all he could think of was, "Lord please let me make a basket." This is Grawe's last game of his basketball career.
Corey Liuget, defensive tackle for the Los Angeles Chargers, announced he created a college scholarship for high school football players. It's called the "Aaron Feis Scholarship". The scholarship is in honor of Coach Aaron Feis, who passed away in the Florida school shooting. "He gave his life for someone, I don’t know if I’m built for that myself, to be completely honest,” Liuget said. The scholarship is a grant, of $10,000, to honor the football player who best represents Feis's personality and legacy.

For the first time in Colorado's state history, a female has been hired as head coach for a baseball team. The school that hired her is called longmont Chrisitan High. She was a softball coach for 24 years, and she had no idea her taking the job would be a historical moment in history.
Kevin Boyle has coached 5 players drafted in the NBA drafts top three, including 2 overall picks. R.J. Barrett, the No. 1 high school player in the country could be his could be his third. The NBA has a age limit of 19 years of age. Barrett is going to Duke for a year and than hopefully going to shake hands with a NBA commissioner. This could change in a few years. The NBA would like to offer a different alternative to college for elite players like Barrett.

For the first time in Colorado's state history, a female has been hired as head coach for a baseball team. The school that hired her is called longmont Chrisitan High. She was a softball coach for 24 years, and she had no idea her taking the job would be a historical moment in history.
ReplyDeleteKevin Boyle has coached 5 players drafted in the NBA drafts top three, including 2 overall picks. R.J. Barrett, the No. 1 high school player in the country could be his could be his third. The NBA has a age limit of 19 years of age. Barrett is going to Duke for a year and than hopefully going to shake hands with a NBA commissioner. This could change in a few years. The NBA would like to offer a different alternative to college for elite players like Barrett.
