Robert Bowers, 46, was shot by police at the Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill. He was treated at Allegheny general hospital – during which he continued to shout antisemitic things. At least three of the doctors and nurses that saved the gunman’s life were Jewish, and were very offended by his remarks. Faced with a 44-count indictment that included charges of murder, hate crimes, obstructing the practice of religion and other crimes. He faces the death penalty.

  2. Sex abuse crisis tops agenda
    Written: November 10, 2018
Recently in the Catholic church, there have been some sex scandals that need to be addressed. Within the past two weeks, bishops all across the country came together to discuss various topics. The sexual abuse cases were at the top of their list. They discussed and trained other bishops and priests to be aware of it and prevent it. If any of them see something going on, it is now mandatory that they report it. Along with this, they discussed their views on having woman being able to be deacons.

  3. There is a new gargoyle on the Catholic cathedral in Cologne, Germany. Pope Francis is the new gargoyle. Above Pope Francis is a small meeting of John F. Kennedy, Harold Macmillan, and Nikita Khrushchev. Pope Francis is considered a decoration due to the fact that there is no water coming out of his mouth. The gargoyle has only been up for two weeks. Many have come to Cologne just to look at the different gargoyles.

Alice Roberts wants to lead a campaign in favor of ending state funding for religious schools. She works for the UK humanists, a non-religious charity, and even became the president recently. The humanists plan to start this campaign thanks to Alice. The catch to this story lies behind Robert’s personal life. Both of her kids attend a Church primary school.

It took locals about a week to realize a new addition had been added to their church entrance. Although the small Pope Francis gargoyle doesn't spurt water out of its mouth it's still nice addition to the Catholic cathedral in Germany. It is Germany's largest Gothic Church. Of the many statues on the church entrance you can find former U.S. President John F. Kennedy. The church also encouraged all people to come by and see if they can spot Pope Francis on their facebook page.

  9. “Fastest Growing Religion is None ”
    November 11th, 2018
There is a very popular trend among Americans to have no religion at all. In fact 1 out of every 4 Americans to don’t claim to be a part of any church. Many are turning to meditation to maintain their spirituality. People aren’t finding connections with the beliefs of the churches now and it becomes irrelevant to them. Some see flaws in the scriptures or teachings of some religions and some find trouble believing in something when science has different ideas.

It also explained religion has become less valuable in society. The article encourages learning about other religions to understand them better. Freedom of religion exists and people should be able to believe what they want to.

10 reasons Americans go to church -- and 9 reasons they don't

A Pew survey looks into why Americans go and why Americans don't go to church.

The top results involve typical reasons, such as "to become closer to god" and "to become a better person". Some reasons also involved raising children with core values that the church shares, with 69% agreeing that it was "so their children will have a moral foundation". The polls also showed people's interest in the church for a sense of community and connections to people within the community.

The poll also surveyed for reasons why people didn't go, with the top (37%) answering that they "practiced their faith in other ways". It also involved typical reasons, such as if they weren't believers (28%) or that they didn't have a house of worship nearby (the lowest entry with 7%). 14% of participants also listed a feeling of not being welcome as their reason for not attending church.

  13. As the U.S. Catholic bishops gather in Baltimore to discuss controversial issues such as clerical sexual abuse and racism, some people are talking about the threat of schism.History shows that the possibility of schism is always present, but the odds against schism today are high. First, in order to have a schism, you need at least one bishop interested in breaking away. If a priest and his parishioners decide to split from the church, that is not a schism. If a priest leads a breakaway, it usually fades when the priest dies.Schismatic bishops can ordain other bishops and priests, so the breakaway has a better chance of continuing; the Great Schism of 1054 between Eastern and Western Christianity has lasted almost 1,000 years.

  15. Is Schism Possible in the Catholic Church?
    November 12, 2018
The U.S. Catholic of Bishops gathered together to talk about some issues that have occurred over the past couple of months. Such as, work related sexual abuse and racism. Due to a lot of people disagreeing with each other, people are worried there might be a split in the church. But in order to have a split in the church one Bishop must want to leave. Or if a priest wants to split, they can break off but the split will only last until they die. The greatest schism (breakaway) in the history of catholic schism happed in 1054 and it was between the Eastern and Western Christianity. It has still been around for 1,000 years. And the only other way to have a schism is to have a real cause to split the community, not just bishops or priest wanting to leave the church. Many people are not in favor of Pope Francis and all of the ordeals going on, could leave to a schism soon.

In Bahati, a western Kenyan town, an outrage has occurred. A Pentecostal pastor refused to marry a young couple until being tested for HIV. He also requested a pregnancy test for the woman as well. HIV is a virus that causes AIDS. According to 2016 reports, the percentage of people with HIV in that area had dropped 80%, while the opinions towards people who had them remained the same. When the tests came back positive for the woman, who also turned out to be pregnant, the pastor refused to continue the ceremony. Thus causing the family of the bride and groom to leave the church they had been waiting in for 8 hours. There are now many speculations on whether the pastor will be punished or not, but whether he is or not, the couple will still marry with another church.

  29. Stan Lee, Jewish Literary Hero
    https://religionnews.com/2018/11/13/stan-lee/

Stan Lee, co-creator of the major comic book brand Marvel, was known as a Jewish literary hero in his religion. Stan died November 12, 2018 of pneumonia but throughout his thousands of comic books he wrote he incorporated his Jewish background in the writing. For example, some of his superhero/characters had disguises. The disguises can be compared to the disguises some Jews had to wear during Word War 2 to keep themselves or their religion a secret. One of Stan's most famous characters, Spider-Man or also known as Peter Parker, keeps his identity a secret wearing a disguise when he does his saving. In the Marvel movies it is also common for the superheroes to wear disguises in public when their appearances are known and they need to be kept on the down-low. In his writing, Stan also wanted to make everyone feel like they belonged no matter how different they were, this can be compared to the Jews feeling like they were lesser because they were different.
