As of Friday, Sept. 23, 2016
A very large storm has plagued the midwest, especially Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. In Iowa, roads north of Waterloo and near Nashua have closed. Flooding has been reported to be near 2008 levels, which was a very severe flood. 2008 was most treacherous to Cedar Rapids. Nashua has reported flooded basements. Closer to us, the Mississippi is at 15 for the flood stage. It will be 19.5 in a week, predicts the National Weather Service.

  4. A man jumps into the Cedar River, which is flooded, to save a deer. People were standing on the bridge on 4th street taking pictures of the flood when they saw the deer jump into the flooded river. The deer swam a little trying to beat the current. People called 911, but the police said there is nothing they could do. Three men decided to help the deer. One man jumped into the river, tethered to a railing, with a life jacket on and grabbed the deer while the other two men helped the man and deer to safety. The man who jumped into the river wanted to stay anonymous.

Several thousand residents of Cedar Rapids left their homes Sunday as floodwaters began to spill out of the rising Cedar River. The river crested Saturday night in Waterloo and Cedar Falls, which are about 55 miles upstream from Cedar Rapids. Which is Iowa’s second largest city, with about 130,000 people. The National Weather Service predicted that the river will crest at 23-24 feet. It crested at 22.95 feet Saturday. That is well below the 2008 record of 27 feet, but still caused major flooding. It remained at 22 feet Sunday afternoon.

  6. In Cedar Rapids, the river is expected to crest at 23 feet on Tuesday. This is below the 2008 record of about 31 feet, but the closest it has been to that level. About five thousand people were told to evacuate their homes and told they should not go back for days because the water will be too high. School is also cancelled until Wednesday, unless weather permits then to cancel it for a longer period of time. Residents said they were told days before to evacuate, where in 2008, they were only given eight to ten hours. The people of Cedar Rapids have been more prepared for a flood like this to happen than they were several years ago.

  7. When a young deer jumped into the Cedar River, it swam a couple hundred feet attempting to beat the current but ended up getting stranded near a bridge. A young girl called 911 while others called the police department. The only response that any of them got was that there was nothing they could do and they would have to wait for it to swim to the shore. Three men didn't like that response so they had a man tethered to a pole while they held on as he jumped in to rescue the deer. After doing so, they noticed that it was a wounded baby deer. They then proceeded to take it out of town and let it go!

In Eastern Iowa there is extreme flooding. The Cedar River is flooded and the water has created in the Waterloo Cedar Falls Area. The Yellow River near Monona is high but not near as bad as it was a month ago. We are due for some dry weather which should give the rivers some time to recede. We are also due for some more rain after 4 days of sunny dry weather.

In Cedar Rapids many people had to leave their homes due to every bad flooding. Many people have pets, and not many places allow people to have pets inside. With the flooding as bad as it is, the Animal Care and Control shelter is letting families keep their pets at the shelter. More than 50 pets have been taken to the shelter. The shelter is also trying to get other hotels to allow families to keep their pets with them just for this time.

Calls were made to the DNR and police but nobody would come help. Leeper jumped into the flooding water, tied the rope around the deer, while two other men pulled the deer up and out. The men took the deer away from the river to a nearby farm so she was away from the rushing waters.

In Waterloo and Cedar Falls there were huge floods, but those people are now able to focus on the cleanup part, with some from Red Cross, who brought in cleanup kits. They said that it includes the essentials to cleanup your homes. They are handing them out for free with no questions asked, because they "Just want to help folks get back in their homes if they can, as quickly as possible." If you'd like to help out those people dealing with damage, you can text "REDCROSS" to 90999 to donate $10. That money will be added to your phone bill.

  32. Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey says while there has been a lot of flooding in the state in recent weeks, there has not been widespread flood damage to crops. Northey says water impacts corn and beans differently. “If beans get water up into the plant, if it gets very far, it will knock them down and make it really hard to be able to harvest,” Northey says. “Corn can stand in standing water and you can get water up over the ear. When you do that you have a risk of mycotoxins, so there’s some procedures to check to see if you have mycotoxins. You certainly don’t want to harvest that and put that with good corn without knowing what you have.” There have also been worried about mold or mycotoxins before the flooding occurred. As long as farmers get right on it with their harvest, mold won't be a huge issue.

Cedar Rapids residents began returning to their homes after evacuation due to location within the original 28-foot flood zone. On Wednesday, officials moved the evacuation zone back from the 28-foot-flood stage to the 24-foot-flood stage. That means that 2,500 homes and businesses have the clearance to move back in. People who live on A Avenue said they were excited to be back, but due to the requests to have peoples power shut off during the evacuation, they could not stay overnight. Crews of Alliant Energy are currently working on turning the power back on, but have said they will be inspect homes inside the evacuation zone before giving the okay to turn it on. “It’s been a delay with the power getting back on and gas getting back on so just kind of waiting for that but really excited to get back into the comfort of my own home,” Taneka Smith said.

Mayor Ron Corbett praised the work on all the help they had from local areas and community members. The reason the water rose so much was because the rain came down to fast for it to go in the water and with the water already being so wet from the rain before the one last night. I hope we don't have any more. Rain gauges are said of had over 7 inches of water in places.
