New Zealand measles outbreak “worst in years” with 22 cases confirmed https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/mar/10/measles-outbreak-new-zealand
Health officials in New Zealand are warning people about the outbreak, stating that more cases will come soon, especially with regions like Canterbury having an entire fifth of their population unvaccinated. Vaccines are being rushed around the country. However, this may be moot, as the rise of ‘antivaxxers’ is rampant in the West, as people ‘skeptically’ avoid the use of vaccines for either “religious or philosophical reasons”, and for reasons, as the article said, long debunked by science, such as the myth that vaccines cause autism. The Canterbury health board states that any unvaccinated individual who comes within 2 meters of an infected person has a 90% infection rate.

In a random order, the participants slept a normal night of sleep (over eight hours) during the first session, but they were kept awake the entire night during the second session. They saw changes in the DNA but only in the adipose tissue, and specifically for genes that have also been shown to be altered at the DNA level in metabolic conditions such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.

F.D.A. Moves to Restrict Flavored E-Cigarette Sales to Teenagers Written: March 13, 2019 - While cigarette use in teenagers has gone down, there has been a drastic increase in e-cigarette use. The legal age is eighteen, but sellers have not been implementing the law very well. The FDA has been trying to figure out a way for teenage e-cigarette usage to decline. Especially in stores that sell those products, the cashier now has to have a valid birthday from the customer. Also, e-cigarettes or vape have to be sold next to tobacco and cigarette products, not out in the open. Many people are against this, but they don't realize that no matter what the FDA does, it's probably too late. Teenagers have already gotten the taste of vaping, so now, they are going to want what they can't have, even more. - https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/13/health/e-cigarettes-teenage-vaping.html

Makeup of an individual's gut bacteria may play role in weight loss Posted August 1st, 2018 The bacteria in our gut has been scientifically proven to decrease the ability to lose weight. There is a bacteria in our gut that helps get energy out of the food we eat. It gives our body additional energy that is ready for use, but since only a small portion of people exercise on a regular basis, and for the ones who do not exercise regularly, this additional energy is converted to fat. Mayo Clinic researchers think the bacteria is converting too much energy for the amount of exercise that a normal person may get rid of. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/08/180801125029.htm

Further analyses of e.g. gene and protein expression demonstrated that the response as a result of wakefulness differed between skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. The researchers have only studied the effect of one night of sleep loss.

Could a smartphone app detect diabetes?
ReplyDeleteToday, more than 30 million people have diabetes, and many other who are unaware they do. However, a recent study shows a new app can help detect diabetes without a trip to the clinic or testing. For many reasons, people struggle with healthcare, so this app could possibly become extremely helpful. By placing the smartphones camera and flash over a finger, the app observes the minute changes of the blood vessel expansion. This app is an extremely cheap alternative to testing today, and can hopefully save thousands of people from waiting too long for testing.

F.D.A. Moves to Restrict Flavored E-Cigarette Sales to Teenagers
ReplyDeleteWritten: March 13, 2019
-
While cigarette use in teenagers has gone down, there has been a drastic increase in e-cigarette use.

Makeup of an individual's gut bacteria may play role in weight loss
ReplyDeletePosted August 1st, 2018
The bacteria in our gut has been scientifically proven to decrease the ability to lose weight.

In the new study, the researchers studied 15 healthy normal weight individuals who participated in two in lab sessions in which activity and meal patterns were highly standardized. The tissue samples were used for multiple molecular analyses, which first of all revealed that the sleep loss condition resulted in a tissue-specific change in DNA. Further analyses of e.g. gene and protein expression demonstrated that the response as a result of wakefulness differed between skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. The researchers have only studied the effect of one night of sleep loss.
